Standard ukulele tuning: G C E A
Soprano, concert and tenor ukuleles are usually tuned G – C – E – A. The G string is tunedhigher than the C string (“re-entrant” tuning), which gives the ukulele its bright, sparkling sound — and is why the lowest note of a ukulele chord is often not its root. A common way to remember it: “Good Cooks Eat Apples”.
How to read the diagrams
- The four vertical lines are the strings G, C, E, A, left to right, as you face the ukulele.
- Horizontal lines are frets; the thick line at the top is the nut.
- A dot shows where to press; the number in it is the finger (1 index … 4 little).
- ○ means the string rings open. A long bar is a barre across several strings.
- The small numbers under each chord (for example
0003for C) list the frets from the G string to the A string. - Teal dots mark the root note of the chord.
Practice tips
Learn chords in the pairs that songs use: C ↔ Am, F ↔ C, G ↔ G7 ↔ C. Change on a slow count of four and keep strumming even if a chord is not perfect — your hand learns the movement faster than the stillness. When a song uses awkward chords such as E or B♭, try thechord transposer to move it into an easier key.
Frequently asked questions
What tuning do these ukulele chords use?
Standard GCEA tuning (re-entrant G): G4 C4 E4 A4, the usual tuning for soprano, concert and tenor ukuleles. Baritone ukuleles are tuned DGBE and use guitar shapes.
Which ukulele chords should I learn first?
C, Am, F and G cover thousands of songs. Add G7, Dm, Em and D and you can play most folk and campfire songs in C and G.
How do I read a ukulele chord diagram?
The four vertical lines are the strings G, C, E and A from left to right, as you look at the ukulele facing you. Horizontal lines are frets. Dots show where to press, the number in a dot is the finger, and O means the string rings open. A number on the left means the diagram starts higher up the neck.
Can I print this ukulele chord chart?
Yes. Use the “Print chart” button. The printable version keeps only the chord grid and fits on A4 or US Letter paper.
Are the fingerings checked?
Every diagram is checked note by note: it must contain all of the chord’s required notes, nothing outside the chord, and be playable with four fingers. Familiar beginner shapes are always shown first.
